How to Check Car Oil

Checking oil level on dipstick

Do you know how to check oil levels in your car? This quick and simple step can be easily performed at home and is one way you can protect your engine. After all, motor oil is the lifeblood of your engine; protecting internal parts from getting damaged with use. Find out how to check car oil with the service team at Rockingham Honda, and feel free to stop by our Salem service center if you need further assistance.

How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car in 4 Steps

Start by checking your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has a dipstick; some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors that don’t use traditional dipsticks. If your vehicle does has a traditional dipstick, then you can follow the four steps below:

  1. Park your vehicle on level ground and give the engine some time to cool.
  2. After your engine has cooled off, pop the hood and locate the dipstick.
  3. Remove the dipstick from your engine and wipe away the oil.
  4. Replace the clean dipstick into its tube and remove it once more. Check both sides of the dipstick to confirm where your oil level is at.

How do you know if your oil is at the right level? If the top of your oil streak is within a cross-hatched area, or between two streaks, then the level is where it should be. If the oil steak is below these marks, then you’ll need to top off your oil.

The Importance of Checking Your Oil Levels

Maintaining the correct oil levels and using the right type of oil is crucial to your engine’s performance. While most vehicles get their oil changed twice a year- depending on the model and how much it’s driven- regularly checking oil levels in between these appointments is important. Most experts recommend checking oil levels monthly to check for potential leaks. If you find your vehicle is losing oil quickly, or notice issues like steam coming out from under your hood, you’ll want to schedule an appointment at the Rockingham Honda service center asap.

Resetting Your Car’s Oil Change Light

While the steps for how to reset an oil change light can vary a bit model-to-model, the general process can be found below:

  • Leave your engine running, but turn off other systems in your vehicle.
  • Look for the “reset” button on the dashboard; this can often be found near the speedometer and fuel gauge.
  • Press and hold the button until the oil change light begins to flash.
  • Turn off the ignition and wait a few moments.
  • At this point, unless your car has a specific protocol, the light should be reset.

Note: Only reset the oil light after your vehicle has received an oil change. If you reset the light without changing the oil, this could lead to engine damage.
